SoCal weather! I had almost forgotten about you in my decade away.
Dress: Heart Moon Star (thrifted)
Gee Whiz Sandals: Eastland
It was warm the day I took these, which is good, because no piece of outerwear I own goes with this dress. None. And I have a "Holy crap you have a lot of jackets" type of closet. I think it's because it needs a cropped or bolero cut jacket, and while I love those, they are difficult to find.
I mentioned thrifting this dress for <$3 back in November, after taking the GREs. Now I'm in the climate to wear it!
I took photos from different angles to give me an idea of how the dress's cut and length suit me. I know halters are probably not the best cut for broad shoulders, and I'm unsure about where the hem hits (maybe it depends on the shoes?) but by gum this dress is insanely comfortable. It skims my body without squeezing or clamping or cutting in anywhere. And the print looks Japanese-y!
Also, I've been trying to figure out what constitutes 'feminine' posture or body language in my mind. I feel my body language in photos is more like "Yarr!" and "HEY." Too much stance training? Tuck the chin down? Maybe I should practice in the mirror.
I love this dress! I can't see any problem with either the length or the halterneck, both are flattering on you. Lovely colours and print too.
ReplyDeletePosing... Ugh, it's so tricky! You look just fine - natural and lovely, so don't worry about it. xxx
Really pretty dress, no wonder you love it - and quelle score for three bucks. I always feel silly posing. I can't do the posy thing that well. I guess the trick is just feeling as natural and relaxed as you can. Work in progress for me too!
ReplyDeleteApril? Amy? Oh yeah, Aya. Welcome back!
ReplyDeleteLovely dress. Pretty print. Not all women can wear halters (big-busted gals complain to me about them all the time), so enjoy how good this looks on you. When I first tried on a halter-dress, I was stunned at how different it felt from anything I'd ever worn before -- there's no male-equivalent. And speaking of feminine poses and postures -- that's my favorite subject! I've been secretly studying it for decades.
I love this dress - it fits you like a glove! The print is awesome too! I often have trouble with figuring out how to stand in my pictures too - in fact, I'm told I keep my chin down too much, so I try to work on raising it up more, but it feels so unnatural!
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about posing; it's all nonsense. As is the bit about broad shoulders and halter tops. They do show of broad shoulders, so if you're proud of yours (I think you should be) then wear them. If you're uncomfortable with your broad shoulders (I hope not) then halter tops aren't the best option. As for hemlines, it can depend on the shoe but it mostly depends on you. If you feel as gorgeous as we think you look, forget the hemline. Trust me. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThis dress is so pretty and you look lovely in it! Posing is hellish so just say feck it! You always look sort of sweet and demure in an I could kick your ass sort of way. I love it! Show off those shoulders and legs! I agree that the dress needs a cropped sort of topper. A vintage eighties denim jacket would work.
ReplyDeleteOne more thing about the poses-I try to avoid the chin down thing since it gives me more chins than I want. You probably won't have that happen for another ten years but why get in the habit?
I adore this dress! So nice to see you wearing something so...dare I say it? feminine! Overly feminine.
ReplyDeleteThe pattern and colours are gorgeous. You scored big time on that number.
I think your poses here are great. They look natural.
I always look away from the camera. 90% of the time when I look at it I look like I'm mad at it. LOL It is my resting bitchy face I guess.
bisous
Suzanne
You look gorgeous! Although I was waiting for some funky jacket to be thrown over the dress because, well, it's you.
ReplyDeleteI think you look fucking amazing. Did I swear? I did. Because that dress is awesome on you! I think you could definitely top it with a jacket - I imagined a long one. But who knows! I wear bizarre pairings often.
ReplyDeleteHalters are wonderful for broad shoulders! This really suits you, Aya - I love this dress on you! What about a short cardigan instead of a jacket?
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely dress! The halter neck and skirt silhouette remind me of the kind of dress a pinup would wear, and the print is great. Hmm, in regards to hemlines ... conventional wisdom on hemlines for petites say just above the knee, but I think that would look odd with the cut of the skirt. I tend to wear my hemlines a bit longer than would be considered flattering, anyhow. I like to feel properly covered at work!
ReplyDeleteThat dress is perfect on you :) The shape and the pattern both look great :)
ReplyDeleteHow nice it is to see you in a dress! And what a beautiful dress it is! I love it, such a lovely print and colour, and really perfect fit. A really great piece for summer!
ReplyDeleteI always talk about my own linebacker shoulders and I'll tell you true - halter dresses look SMOKIN' on us broad shoulder gals. Work it, girl!
ReplyDeleteOooh, pretty dress Aya! Great arms, great shoulders and great back! Yep! You should be wearing dresses like this! The posing for photos thing...actually getting worse for me, rather than better, LOL. No idea why...one would think it would get easier. I don't think there's such a thing as a good rear view, but necessary for the purpose of showing cut and style of a garment. I think your photos look natural and at ease here. Especially like the side view. You DO have good posture girl!
