Repurposed

  I hate mornings.
Prairie hoodie: Prairie Underground (thrifted)
Dress: Liz Lange) maternity for Target (thrifted)
Harness: Audra Jean (Megan Mae)
Jodhpurs-as-leggings: Ariat Pro (thrifted)
Boots: Fitzwell (6pm.com, old)

Trivia: my mother has a stuffed cat with the same facial expression I am wearing above. She was scooting through an airport in Japan to catch a flight when she saw it in a gift store window and couldn't stop laughing. She brought it home and showed me, and sometimes when I wake up with this expression while I'm visiting, she runs and gets it and holds it up next to my face.
I'm convinced modern scheduling was invented by psychopaths who ran around changing everything while the rest of us were sleeping until a reasonable hour. I spend the first two hours of each day hating everyone on earth (not personal) and not being able to open my eyes all the way.
Maternity wear: yes! Pregnant: no! I think it drapes very nicely as a tunic/dress.

As much as I hate mornings, I like socializing with my friends more, so after a late night of a housewarming party and going to see my friend's band play, I got up early to go to dim sum, another housewarming party, and wushu class. It is more socializing than I've probably done in the rest of 2013.
These pinstripe Ariat jodhpurs (mentioned in my thrifting post here) are so comfortable. They stretch very well and the pockets are reasonably roomy and accessible.

As I was going out the door, I added this hat by San Diego hat company, since I seemed to have an overall 'riding' theme going on, with repurposed jodhpurs, riding-style boots, and a Western-inspired hoodie. Sorry I didn't get a photo of it, but I've used my brilliant photoshop skills to bring the full outfit to you:
I'm still low on sleep, so this is a short post, but when the week slows down, I hope to have more up. Have you ever worn clothes that weren't as intended?

Giveaway winner and a peek back in time

Congratulations *drumroll* ...to the Couturgatory giveaway winner Tag R! I'll be in contact shortly to ask about what thrifted goodie you'd like from San Francisco!

And since things have been a whirlwind this weekend (I'll have a full post on the Bloggy award from Ally of Shybiker when I think I have some words. You should check her blog out in the highly unlikely event that you did not find my blog through hers.) here are some older outfits that got left behind for one reason or other this last month.

Spoiler alert: the reason was usually lighting. Stupid time change. Stupid sun not putting in enough hours at its job.
Laguardia Cloche: Goorin Bros. sample sale (available here)
Long cloak hoodie in blue suede: Prairie Underground (old, more colors)
Purple knit top: Elie Tahari (thrifted)
Cotton godet skirt: Free People (old)
Floral gauze square scarf: Old Navy (available here)
Boots: Two Lips (thrifted)
This outfit is pretty much exactly the same as the Waiting for Godet one except with a different top and a scarf. (Scarf is no longer on sale for $6. Boo.) Got skipped due to lighting, made a very similar outfit to photograph later, but I was super excited at the time because it was the first time I'd managed to coordinate an outfit, scarf, shoes, and a hat. Unfortunately also the last.

Dress: Treasure Rock (Treasure Rock on eBay)
Top: Treasure Rock (old)
Sandals: Eastland (old)
Last wore this shirt way back in June, when my dear friend Diana was visiting. Since I never wear it, I hacked the bottom off and turned it into sleeves as a topper for this sleeveless dress, also by Treasure Rock. Well, formerly sleeveless. I also added straps to the dress as it was driving me crazy.
They line up great, I just wish I hadn't chopped quite so much off. I was worried the sleeves wouldn't be long enough, but there turned out to be more than enough fabric, length-wise. Width-wise it was close! I had to draft a custom sleeve pattern, but I'm pretty happy at how it turned out.
I'm also endorsing Eastland Sandals as having a wide toe bed. I own two pairs of their sandals, and these aren't even wide width (they offer wide width on some of their designs.) My toes aren't squished, and I usually have to go with at least width D for that to happen. I'm working on a wide shoes review page that I'll stick in the sidebar. :D

Happy rest of the weekend, folks, especially for those who have a long weekend for Remembrance Day. I have my own strong feelings on war, military, and authoritarian power pyramids in society, but I do recommend checking out the history of the 442nd Infantry Regiment from WWII. It was composed almost entirely of Japanese American soldiers who volunteered despite their families being imprisoned in internment camps. I'm sad there was a schism between those who served and those who angrily refused the draft (some of whom were deported to Japan, a country they'd never lived in,) because of the loss of their and their families' rights. I think both courses of action took such incredible bravery.

GREat Thrifting Luck

Last Friday I finally took the GREs, a standardized test required to apply to graduate schools. I did well, which was a huge relief because the test is 3 hours long, and I have ADHD. I'm medicated, which extends my ability to sit still, but my limit is 90 minutes and the entire last hour I was fighting not to get up and run shrieking around the room. I was pretty burnt afterward.

Therefore in the following days I treated myself by going to three thrift stores. *cackles* I'm afraid I overshot my monthly budget for entertainment, but I will allow it this time for celebratory purposes. (:

If you want to get in on my thrifting luck, check out my Couturgatory giveaway where the winner gets to choose something for me to go hunting for! This weekend, I knocked off two items on my searching-for list, which I keep on the right side of this blog. On to the treasures!
I found this beautiful gold and creme crepe duvet cover for $7. It has tassels at the corners and black circles with gold thread patterns on it. My bed looks like it belongs in an old eastern fantasy palace, now. (Especially since I have a mattress! I defied family advice and bought one for my back instead of propping myself up on a wood futon frame with medical pillows left over from deceased relatives. My family is cheap bordering on crazy sometimes. :D) I lounge under my new duvet cover like a sultana. My roommate says it looks like one of the blinged out robes a boxer wears when coming out to the ring, but I ignored him. It is much classier than that. For royalty. Couturgoyalty. Totally a word now.

Incidentally, did you know you can test for whether something is silk by burning a fiber? You can see a video here. I took a loose thread from the inside of my new cover and tried it. It curled up and hardened, so I knew it was a polymer, a fiber made of repeating subunits via chain chemical reaction. You can see a 1949 documentary here about nylon and rayon. I had to do a project on polyacrylonitrile this summer, also known as acrylic, if you ever see that in your clothing labels. I could chat about it all day.
First thing crossed off my list: wine skinny jeans, that I will wear as leggings! American Apparel, so made in the US *and* thrifted. Double win. (:
2nd item from the list: chambray mermaid skirt by Bebe. This is ankle length on me and doesn't require any alterations. This is HUGE. I've been looking for one for over a year, since chopping 5" off a mermaid skirt results in a vague A-line. Believe me, I've done it, and it made me sad.

Incidentally, I didn't know the difference between denim and chambray before I started reading style blogs. Hooray learning!
I told myself when buying a new (old) Heart Moon Star sundress that maybe I'll go to grad school somewhere with a summer, so it's not an insane, impractical purchase. The great fit, Japanese-ish florals, and the <$3 price sold me, however impractical it is for SF.
A Prairie Underground prairie hoodie! I found out about this brand years ago through Already Pretty. They're designed and made in Seattle, and the hoods actually fit human heads, instead of those stupid useless dealies the size of a yarmulke you find attached to so many garments these days. They are thick and warm, perfect for SF weather, which given their city of origin, makes perfect sense. Unfortunately they're way out of my price range. Way way.

The nice gal at the counter knocked the price down to $5.49(!) when she pointed out some marks on the left sleeve that hadn't come out when the garment was washed. She even told me to bring it back if I had any problems after washing it again! They might be very light bleach stains that got brushed on, but they're almost unnoticeable, and for a garment that's $264 retail, I am way more than happy. Way way. :D
Honest-to-goodness pinstripe jodhpurs. Jodhpurs! The company, Ariat Pro, does riding gear. I initially picked them up because HAHAHA what will I look like in these? and also $5.49, but I ended up liking them! I shall make them my new pinstripe and suede leggings. They're in brand new condition, and they are oh so comfortable. Rich folks sure know how to live!
This shirt's asymmetrical ruffles make me look like I'm wearing a shoulder pauldron. Haha! Part of it could be that it is XL and probably doesn't fit the way it was designed. I liked it anyway though, and bought it with the intent of making an outfit that looks like old fashioned armor, but for an everyday look.

Incidentally, I totally failed at my own thrifting game of Is This Brand Cheap, or Expensive? because the shirt did not even register on my radar. When I looked up the brand when I got home, it turns out one.september is an Anthropologie brand. Why does half the stuff I thrift turn out to be from that store? I am not in their target demographic.
Lastly, some housewares. The character on the left is Kogepan, my favorite Japanese character of all time. He is a piece of bread that fell off the tray when being taken out of the oven, and as a consequence is burnt and unwanted. Since the entire purpose of a delicious bean bread is to be wanted and eaten, he suffers existential crises, leaving home to discover himself and eventually returning to the bakery he came from to try to lecture the pretty, unburnt bean buns about life. Naturally, they find him morose and scary and listen to nothing he says. I love this character SO MUCH.

He got discontinued some years ago and it's been increasingly harder to find Kogepan things, so when I found this ashtray for $.99 I nearly squealed aloud. I washed all the gunk off and I think I will use it to hold rings.

I also picked up this Cutty Sark jug (I used to work for a pirate game so I still have a fondness for nautical things) and two silver-plated salad forks. I use salad forks instead of full sized forks because my jaw is quite small.

Not pictured is a Lulu Lemon exercise top, which I bought entirely on word-of-mouth. My dearest friends M. and C. swear up and down about the quality of the brand, and my classmates (my major is largely made up of athletic types) have nothing but good things to say about it. I've worn it once for a run and it does seem pretty awesome. We'll see if it stands the test of time. My first exercise tanks, bought in the year 2000 from Target when I started wushu are still going, and seriously, they get washed almost every week. I'm hoping to use them until I pass away and maybe even will them to someone. If they eventually wear out, I will save the fabric and put them in a quilt. They have earned a permanent place in my life. Do you have clothes that just keep going and going beyond any reasonable expectation?

In addition to all these lovely things for me, I found some nice gifts for my friends that I am looking forward to mailing out. Yahoo! I'm feeling pretty fine. What are your latest treasures, thrifted, gifted, retail, or otherwise?

Marooned

My camera is crooked! Maybe these outfit pictures will look dramatic. :D
Cropped jacket: BIZZ USA (thrifted)
Shirt: BCBG (eBay)
Jewelry: Chatelaine pin (eBay), bracelet (Claire's, v.old)
Skirt: heyday (thrifted)
Coat: Via (thrifted)
Tights: MUJI USA (old)
Boots: Two Lips (thrifted)

This blue long-sleeved BCBG shirt has a cool draping detail around the waist and a hanging down panel. I tried tucking in the rest of the shirt and letting the hanging panel out. The extra ruched fabric around the waist adds girth, but I think the overall look was interesting.

I love blue and maroon together. In fact, I was a big fan of this whole outfit until I got out of my car and started walking to school. Then I discovered that my tights and my skirt had fallen in love on the ride over and they kept hugging. The skirt would bunch and ride up between my thighs with every step. It needs a slip. I put in a temporary fix by adding three long strips of duct tape in the front. Actually I wouldn't mind making it a permanent fix. Does duct tape stay on in the wash?

  Happy mid-week, everyone!

Orange is the New Black Widow

First up, dear readers: if you're interested in entering the Couturgatory giveaway, leave a comment in this post with a valid e-mail address. I need an e-mail address to contact you if you win! If you forgot to put one, just leave another comment, and of course if you're not interested in entering but just want to say hi, you can leave it out. :D

You can enter until Saturday, November 9th 11:59pm Pacific time. Then I'll draw the winner!
---
We've had some November sun breaking through the cloud layer the last few days, and I am loving it.
Shirt: Rennes (cheap junior store)
Vest: Last Kiss (same junior store)
Trousers: Cop Copine (thrifted)
Bracelet: Foreign Exchange (old)
Boots: ALDO (thrifted)

I got the shirt and vest at the same cheap junior store in Colma that was going closing up shop. I never thought of wearing them together until now. I think the shirt looks a little like a shop apron in front, and I really like how the backs layered over one another:
I feel like a black widow spider, except of course I don't kill and eat my lovers, haha. (:

I merely lay my eggs in their bodies so that when they hatch, my larvae consume the organs and eat their way out of the thoracic cavity. Technically, my hands are clean.

Last Kiss is kind of a macabre brand name. Last kiss of what? Of death? Of fate? Of the dragon? (Go with that last one. I had a professor with a huge crush on Jet Li. I approve and she's an amazing teacher, to boot.)
I mentioned making a Facebook life event before to commemorate hemming some complicated pants. These Cop Copine ones are the second pair I was referring to. They look simple, but the cuffs are sewn in place with an invisible stitch, and I was worried when I cut the fabric that I wouldn't leave enough to fold under, hem, then fold back up and invisible hem. You can still see the line where I pulled the cuffs back to do the stitching.
I've been wearing these ALDO platform boots a lot, and I never have a good, close shot of them. Reader Sue mentioned having wide forefeet, and when she mentioned squished toes, man oh man did I relate. I found these at the thrift shop and although they are only M width, the squared high toe boxes fit great. They're my go-to boots now for when I need to be on my feet for a few hours.

Sometimes "wide shoe" labels can be misleading, because our feet have so many dimensions. People can have collapsed or high arches, high insteps or flat ones, edema or bony feet, wide forefeet and/or midfeet, or anything in between. I've learned through trial and error at 6pm.com that Naya width C is the exact width as Fitzwell EE, for example. (I have multiple pairs from both companies, and placed sole to sole, they line up perfectly.) They both run a little narrow for me, but because they are all leather they stretch out over time. Or around a big rock, which is what I use when I get impatient/uncomfortable.

And since my feet are very wide at the toes (think bear claws) but bony at the heels and skinny on top, David Tate WW shoes are comical on me. It's like someone blew up a balloon around my foot and I have a fascinating empty space all around between me and the shoe. I'm assuming those fit feet that are wide in the up-and-down sense as well as the side-to-side. They *were* one of the only sandals that ever let all of my toes roam free, though. Sigh. Maybe I could buy them again and inject them with foam that would harden around my feet and make the perfect fitting, if really ugly shoe.

My friend Ally has mentioned difficulties finding size 12, and I have the opposite problem where many companies carry 6-10, and I'm 5.5. What are your shoe fit problems?

American Gothic Lolita

Happy Sunday, everyone! Today is my entry for Spygirl's (Paint it) Black challenge. I'm also linking to Not Dead Yet Style's Visible Monday, because I felt pretty visible in this outfit. I already submitted my fedora outfit to Style Crone's Hat Attack, but go check it out for a parade of gorgeous headgear!
Black lace dress: Taunt (eBay)
Blazer w/pink pinstripes: Guess (thrifted)
Platform boots: ALDO (thrifted)
Fascinator: Cara New York (Nordstrom, old)
Kokeshi necklace: AGATHA Paris (gift from Cathy)

What do you think? I thought it was a little Gothic Lolita, but in an everyday way. I hope to get more wear out of this dress by styling it down.

After only 32 years, I feel confident enough to wear red lipstick! Here's how the outfit got put together. I started with a clingy black lace dress I love but never have the occasion to wear:
The inner hem is very short, but the lace handkerchief overlayer makes me feel safe. Sexy is not flashing your underwear. (; I added thrifted platform boots by ALDO (roomy, square toe boxes!)
Then for warmth I added this gorgeous Guess blazer. It's got all sorts of old fashioned details, like ruffle hem and princess sleeves, and the pinstripes are pink! Thrifted it years ago, no idea what it goes with, so I'm going to try everything.
It's cut higher in the back, which makes it harder to wear over trousers, but it makes a nice proportion over the dress.
Then add necklace and fascinator! Any excuse to wear my fascinator.
Here's a closeup of the fabric and the sleeve embroidery. It unfortunately makes it impossible to shorten the sleeves, but the alternative is not having it, so I will deal. :D
Lastly, I tried a femme fatale makeup look yesterday. I thought the liquid black sparkle eyeliner was pretty overt, but in this test shot (I check the lighting) it's still very subtle. Maybe I will try a heavier hand and venture above the lash line.
Fisheye! ... kinda.
Have a great rest-of-weekend everyone! Don't forget to check out my half anniversary giveaway in the post below. Couturgatory's 6 months old now and counting!

Couturgatory Half Anniversary and Giveaway!

Now that I have cleverly driven off people with my Sexy Unicorn face, I would like to announce Couturgatory's 6 month anniversary/100th post special celebration exclusive giveaway extravaganza! That's right, the fewer there are of you, the better your chances are of winning! I did this out of love.

The rules are simple: if you would like to win the Couturgatory SCEGE, leave a comment on this post, with a valid e-mail address. Might want to format it using [at] and (d0t) or whathaveyou to avoid spam bots. I will draw a winner via random number generator in one week- on Saturday, November 9th.

What will you be winning? These anatomically incorrect kidneysThis handmade Couturgatory orchid ornament! I've used the same wallpaper since Couturgatory started (and still not gotten around to fixing that sidebar with the 'follow' options) so I made an orchid in purple and white out of felt and batting. :D
And since the ornament turned out more questionable-looking than I had hoped, by way of apology you also win a thrifted item. Of your choice! That's right, if you win you can shoot me info about your desired item and, if relevant, your size, and I will keep my keen thrifting eye out for you in San Francisco until I find it.

You can be as specific as you like or leave it up to me! Examples include:
"a full grey skirt by [brand], size 10"
  "a pastel floral shirt"
  "a teacup and saucer"
  "unicorn"

While there are no guarantees, I thrift a few times a month, so your chances of getting something interesting are pretty good. :D

It feels like a lot longer than 6 months, but I realized I started this blog when I was the most continually stressed out I'd been in my life to date, and that probably warps my sense of time. It's been wonderful (the blogging part, not the stress.)  I love each and every one of your comments, AND I'm pleased to announce that I've finally gained enough weight to be back to my pre-scholastic freakout size. I can even jog a few miles again! Things are coming up Aya.

Thank you all so much for reading. I have met such wonderful new friends in the style blog community, and it turns out some of my pre-existing friends visit (I see you guys!) I have new awesome style and thrifting blogs I love to read, and I even get cards and beautiful things in the mail. I never imagined so many wonderful things would come about from me slapping some enthusiastic photos of my clothes onto the Internet and chattering away. My life is richer for having met all of you, and I cannot imagine my 2013 without you!
