Pirate Life

This is my second attempt at styling this foofy shirt. Today, I am a pirate:
I think my winter gloves really finish the look.
Foofy shirt: Parsaman New York (thrifted)
Waistcoat: styles (thrifted)
Wool pants: Banana Republic (thrifted)
Boots: ALDO (thrifted)
Wool coat: S by Serle (thrifted)
Gloves: Target (available here)
Well, maybe more like a navy captain, with this coat. Airship captain is more my thing, but I'll give this a try. :D If I had a coat with a a sweeping tail and swirly folds (technical term) going from front to back, it would look more piratey. This coat was a song at the thrift shop and is fully lined though, so you are hearing no complaints from me.

I am going to link up to Patti's Visible Monday with this one. A suit like this feels pretty visible.
I figured out I can go back to my everyday steampunk style if I put leggings and long sleeved undershirts under everything and if the weather cooperates. Hooray! I wore it to class, but no one shouted "Yarr!" at me. Oh well.

Secret for when one's vest and trousers don't overlap: I folded and scotch-taped the bottom of the shirt up, since it was too short to tuck in.

Do you have wardrobe quick-fixes? What are you layering up with this winter? Are you also a pirate?

  1. Aya this is such a cool outfit! I really love that shirt. I am a huge Doctor Who fan, and that shirt reminds me of the Third Doctor's shirts, so cool!

  2. Forget Dr. Who, please tell me you've seen the Seinfeld Puffy Shirt episode! I think Jerry would have been a lot happier if he'd had this fabulous waistcoat to go with his pirate shirt.

I love this look, and yes, you need the gloves. I'm aching to see a little color, especially deep red or purple - maybe a scarf or brooch, or a big floppy handkerchief. But I'll be there on your airship when you're ready to take off.

And thank you for the offer of help with my camera. I do have a manual, I'm just so lazy, and I tune out when I read that stuff. What I really need is a proper light and a more interesting background. Also, I'm thinking about taking a photography course at the local community college next time it's offered - it would be fun to do it in a class!

    1. Never watched Seinfeld; it never caught my interest, I'm afraid! I've heard of this famed episode, though.

I love the idea of a brooch or another way of injecting color. I'll have to go for it!

The photography class sounds like a lot of fun. I love community college; I can't wait to have the time to take a non-required class or two some day.

  3. Hi there, thanks for calling in at my blog and commenting, it's good to meet you! I have spotted your thoughtful and intelligent comments on other blogs I follow, I don't know why I haven't visited you sooner!
I love the piratical look, you know I love a waistcoat so I am impressed with your double-breasted cap-sleeved version. And a bit of floofy lace is always good for girlifying (or dandying up) a masculine silhouette! xxx

  4. Very structured and elegant too actually. It is not easy to pull off these kind of look but you did it so well!

  5. Aaaawwww! Aya the pirate!! I always pick pirates over ninjas, sorry ninjas.

I've been leaning heavily on my sweater collection for once. It's been dark and dreary and sky permanently grey until today. I've heard good things about layering silk against your skin under clothes to keep warm. I'm going to attempt that this weekend when I'll be working outside.

  6. I have a weakness for Jack Sparrow, I truly do. Or Johnny Depp. Or both. Anywho, yes, pirates are hot! Wait, that wasn't the question, right? Let's pillage and loot and shiver our timbers!

Um, yes. Safety pins are my poison.

  7. I need to try this tape solution.

I'd be careful…the sea is looking pretty angry today my friend. That puffy shirt might not save you!

  8. Aaargh! It is a pirate look, but you make it look glamorous. Very flattering on you, and I think a red scarf would be fabulous with it! If it makes you feel better, I like to wear ruffles with a vest over them- we can be pirates together!

    1. Yay, I knew I could not be the only one! I love the suggestion you and Val made; I'll have to give that a try next time.

  9. Hi Aya!
Scotch tape the bottom of a shirt when too short - That is a first for me, is it comfortable to wear?
I stapled my hems but you know that already, and oh! i use safety pin for when i'm about to loose a button, too lazy to sew!

I love the steampunk look on you- I wonder if this style would look great on me as it does on you!

Snow this morning, about 15 cm and still snowing!

    1. Haha, thank you Ariane!

I forgot to mention I was wearing a long-sleeved undershirt, so the scotch tape was not touching my skin. You should totally try the casual Steampunk look!

  10. Oh yes, airship captain! Or any job that would get me next to Jack Sparrow. You look fab and thanks for sharing with Visible Monday.

  11. This is another side of your steampunk persona. Pretty well dressed for a pirate, though. Instead of the airship captain, perhaps a mysterious passenger, with a card up her sleeve, a dagger in her boot and a dangerous, secret mission under wraps. Love how it looks IRL as well. Foofy, is it? Lovely word.
Your coat reminds me ... I've lost my best black wool coat. Dan and I both went through the closets thoroughly, and it's nowhere to be found. I'm decimated. WTF? How could I lose a whole coat? Oh well.
You look fabulous, in the best sense of the word!

  12. Yar! I was a pirate today! I love this outfit - so much fun. I really like your "steamy" looks!

  13. I'm slow making the Visible Monday rounds but even in the little window I thought, arrr, that there's a pirate shirt! I like how you've added everything else. Swashbuckling. I see water more than air.
I have been known to use tape but my faithful fix is throwing a sweater over an irreparable tear in something that I can't bear to part with yet.
